I agree with you Justin. The dems will probably overshoot considerably which will lead to a major loss of seats in 08. Let's hope no permanent damage is done. I wish I could not say that great damamge has not been done by the leadership of my own party.

Hi,
I tend to be fairly involved politically. I believe that each and every time we get a chance to vote, we get a chance to determine the future of our country, our friends, and ourselves. I go into this election, however, with mixed feelings. I feel good about the fact that we are going to turn the page and start a new chapter after the last eight years of mis-rule by the Bush/Cheney administration and their friends elsewhere in government. I am also glad that the Republican party is getting a wake up call that their message is no longer resonating with the American public and that they need to go back and figure out a way to appeal to the American populace again. I am hoping that they go back to being a party of small government, and minimal interference with people's personal lives, rather than the party of increasing centralized government power, and meddling in people's personal lives with things like warrantless wiretaps, and religious zealotry. I am concerned, however, that we are going to whip saw too far in the other direction. I have been a strong supporter of Democrats over the last eight years, mostly as a way to neutralize the Bush administration (which clearly hasn't worked). That said, I believe that we are likely to end up with too many Democrats in the House and Senate, which could lead to left wing tyranny, just as we are leaving a period of right wing tyranny. We need some balance here people! All of that said, I am glad that I voted, glad that I have had a chance to participate in our election process, and glad that my very tiny voice gets to be heard in setting the direction of our country.

Go America, Go!

Raj,

Great article. One thing, how do would you suppose that we become a manufacturing country again when that seems to be long gone in the American way of life. Sad as it may be.

Like I have told you over and over since we met in 2004. Every major superpower has imploded by greed. This is what we are witnessing right now. The question is, how the fuck could we be so dumb to let this happen? An idiot like myself saw this coming down Broadway for 5 years. Over leveraged companies, no new indusrty, broken currency, and complacence. Too boot, we can send a man to the moon but we cant figure out a way to build a fucken car that runs on something different than oil... Its all a big scam and no one cares about anyone except themselves. We are all losers and only respond when the entire ship is sinking. As a nation we deserve nothing better then a collapse. As people we deserve nothing greater than failure. Wake up America or well be sucking chinese $%&@ in the next 10 years.....

"America's...leaders have become intoxicated with the idea that the accomplishments and achievements of preceding generations assure them not only of success, but of only limited consequences for their failures of judgement and infidelity to traditional American values. ...(they) seem to believe that America's wealth is so great that it cannot be exhausted...."
I believe that what the Pope said was very powerful. It is also something hits very close to home. As a college student, I know that I take advantage of all of the freedoms that I am given. The ability to go to any school in the nation, take any class no matter what my religion, and the chance to decide my own future. But, the most important thing that I take for granted, is the ability to vote. As part of a representative democracy, we have a lot of opportunities that other people around the world do not have. With this said, I believe the Pope has reminded us that we need to continue to practice our democratic rights.

I understand that you call the 13th Congressional District of PA a vignette of America, but I do not believe that McCain will not have a chance if Barack gets the nod. Although Saturday Night Live had a great deal of fun poking at McCain's age last night, I still believe that there is a fear in America's eyes when they look at the Democrats. When you see Hilary Clinton, you obviously see a woman. Is the country ready for the first female president? And when you look at Obama, you see an inexperienced, young man. What will happen when he is faced with some of the countries toughest decisions? McCain has been around forever. We know how he'll respond. He is very stereotypical, and exactly what America wants.

I am not so sure if it is the current administration that is the problem, but the fact that most people in America don't know the background of Saddam and Iraq. The 16 UN Resolutions that the world disregared before Bush actually took action on the 17th one. It is horrible that we are in this war, causing our oil prices to sky-rocket and our secondary interests to control our daily lives. But Bush had the courage to embark on a mission that others were too afraid to do in the past. I believe that once the world understands this, and sees the position that Bush was in, then maybe there will be a little boost in patriotism. It may possibly take a new administration to put this idea forth, but Bush should not take the blame for all of this.
