Vote America, VOTE!

November 4, 2008

You know what today is, and this election day is projected to have record-setting turnout.  I brought a book to read in line, and if you are voting in NYC especially I’d suggest you do the same, or make friends with the people in line which is another way to meet your neighbors and fellow Americans.  We at Go America, GO! encourage you to exercise the unique privilege you have as an American: VOTE.  Use your voice by your vote at every voting opportunity, especially today.

Being able to vote is a fundamental component of being American.  I think of the many people in my family who are World War II veterans and what they fought for so I can vote, among other American privileges: my grandfather, who was awarded the Purple Heart as a member of the Third Division of the Marines in the Pacific, my Aunt Bette, who was one of the first women in the Navy, and my uncle Edward, who was president of his high school class at Farmington High School and was killed in the Pacific, aged 18, at Iwo Jima.  I also think of the Eagle Scout project my brother R.J. did in honor of this at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Connecticut.

Today we invite you to post your comments on what being able to vote as an American means to you.

    Hi,
I tend to be fairly involved politically. I believe that each and every time we get a chance to vote, we get a chance to determine the future of our country, our friends, and ourselves. I go into this election, however, with mixed feelings. I feel good about the fact that we are going to turn the page and start a new chapter after the last eight years of mis-rule by the Bush/Cheney administration and their friends elsewhere in government. I am also glad that the Republican party is getting a wake up call that their message is no longer resonating with the American public and that they need to go back and figure out a way to appeal to the American populace again. I am hoping that they go back to being a party of small government, and minimal interference with people’s personal lives, rather than the party of increasing centralized government power, and meddling in people’s personal lives with things like warrantless wiretaps, and religious zealotry. I am concerned, however, that we are going to whip saw too far in the other direction. I have been a strong supporter of Democrats over the last eight years, mostly as a way to neutralize the Bush administration (which clearly hasn’t worked). That said, I believe that we are likely to end up with too many Democrats in the House and Senate, which could lead to left wing tyranny, just as we are leaving a period of right wing tyranny. We need some balance here people! All of that said, I am glad that I voted, glad that I have had a chance to participate in our election process, and glad that my very tiny voice gets to be heard in setting the direction of our country.

    Go America, Go!

I agree with you Justin. The dems will probably overshoot considerably which will lead to a major loss of seats in 08. Let’s hope no permanent damage is done. I wish I could not say that great damamge has not been done by the leadership of my own party.

Speak your mind on Go America Go!?
